Workshop on Hybrid Robotics

hybrot (short for "hybrid robot") is a cybernetic organism in the form of a robot controlled by a computer consisting of both electronic and biological elements. The biological elements are typically rat neurons connected to a computer chip.

Another interesting feature of the hybrot is its longevity. Neurons separated from a living brain usually die after only a couple of months. However, due to a specially designed incubator built around a gas-tight culture chamber selectively permeable to carbon dioxide, but impermeable to water vapor, reduces the risk of contamination and evaporation, and may extend the life of the hybrot to one to two years.

Day 1

Session 1 – Introduction to Hardware and Software

  • Introduction to Arduino (Atmel Atmega 32) Microcontroller
  • Applications and Advantages.
  • Introduction to Arduino Software.
  • Introduction to basic structure of the program. 

Session 2 – Learning of Interfacing

  • Connection of Arduino with Laptop.
  • Compiling and uploading program.
  • Small program demonstration.
  • Creating digital outputs at output ports.
  • Creating Analog Outputs at output ports.
  • Creating digital inputs at input ports.
  • Pulse Width modulation concept. 

Session 3 – Hands On Session

  • Interfacing IR sensor with Arduino and Robot.
  • Interfacing L293d motor driver with Arduino.
  • Serial and parallel communication.
  • Interfacing Bluetooth with Arduino.
  • Designing full robotic system.
  • Testing Robot using computer and Android. 

 

Day 2

Session 1 – Introduction to Sixth Sense Robotics

  • Introduction to Vision based robots.
  • Vision Controlled Motion
  • Image Processing
  • Image acquisition devices
  • Image Processor
  • Image analysis tools
  • Machine Control 

Session 2 – Image processing and acquisition using MATLAB

  • Tools and functions used for Image Processing in MATLAB
  • Image acquisition in MATLAB
  • Image processing
  • Color spaces
  • Color format conversion
  • Showing and storing of images
  • Thresholding techniques
  • Important functions of MATLAB used for color and edge detection 

Session 3 – Hands On session

  • Sending serial and parallel data using MATLAB
  • Implementing Image processing on the kit and Robot Section 

 

The Workshop content consists of an approximately equal mixture of lecture and hands-on lab. 

Recommendation: It is strongly recommended to bring your own LAPTOP during the training on which you can install and run programs if you would like to do the optional, hands-on experiments/exercises after the trainings/ workshops.
